Indigenous Business Month 2022 is here, and we are excited to celebrate nationally this October. This year’s theme ACTIONS TODAY, IMPACT TOMORROW is set to inspire the next generation of First Nations business leaders. We acknowledge and celebrate that the journey for many business owners is not linear and this October, encourage Indigenous business leaders and community to share their story, their experiences, mentor others and inspire the next generation of business leaders to continue our collective momentum.

To kick off the festivities, we are highlighting some Indigenous business who are living and breathing this year’s theme but acknowledge there are so many more going about this as part of their everyday business, because its proudly what we do!

First Australians Capital led by a team of incredible Indigenous leaders who are actively removing barriers and providing support to Indigenous entrepreneurs and their businesses to participate in the broader economy, recognising the strength of our 60,000 plus years of sustainable Indigenous business and setting them up for further success in today’s commercial world.

Sobah Australia’s first non-alcoholic craft beer company, Aboriginal owned and managed, who describe our way of Indigenous businesses, acting from a position of respecting people, place, and the environment, understanding, and working towards fulfilling responsibilities to that we are connected to and, engaging in positive reciprocity.

Mayi Harvests follow traditional methods of wild harvesting native fruits and seeds throughout the six seasons in Kimberley of Western Australia, grounded in knowledge of our ancestors, value-based practice in our modern-day culture and a Responsibility to our future – land and people.

Now in its eighth-year, Indigenous Business Month Co-Founder and Managing Director of Iscariot Media Leesa Watego shares her sense of pride in being a part of this annual celebration.

“I love that Indigenous Business Month is grassroots. It’s driven by the Indigenous Business Sector for the Indigenous Business Sector,”

said Leesa.

Dr Michelle Evans, Co-founder of Indigenous Business Month and Director of Dilin Duwa Centre for Indigenous Business Leadership shares how important it is for the sector and allies to come together and celebrate.

“Indigenous Business Month is a community driven celebration of Indigenous business in Australia. Indigenous Business Month is about events and collaborative spaces where business owners, sector stakeholders and all allies who support Indigenous economic empowerment come together to applaud Indigenous business success in all its diversity,”

said Michelle.

Mayrah Sonter, Co-founder of Indigenous Business Month and Co-founder and Director of 33 Creative, said

“First Nations cultures are steeped in learning from the people who have gone before us. As a business owner today, we’re paving the way for the young people around us to learn, creating a ripple effect for our sector and opportunities for their future. I’m excited about the next generation of leaders and amplifying the impact for our sector,”

said Mayrah.

By taking ACTIONS TODAY for greater IMPACT TOMORROW, we can create an even more powerful future for Indigenous business generations to come. We call upon Indigenous Business Sector and allies to gather online or in person, host an event to celebrate Indigenous Business Month. Consider your actions and how they create a lasting impact for the future of the Indigenous business sector and point to these, share them and encourage others to do the same. This includes purchasing from an Indigenous business, reforming your supply chains to support more Indigenous suppliers and bringing the next generation of business leaders along with you through mentoring.

What ripple effect will your actions have?
